Jesse’s Camera Gear must cost like $50 grand. Ummm No.
Let me say that if I HAD $50,000 just floating around for some camera gear, I would spend it, every penny, and I could! But I don’t, and I haven’t spent NEARLY that much! You can’t even hit that number if I include my vehicle in my camera gear… Anyway some people have asked “What camera gear do you use?” And to avoid being pretentious I will answer them in a very public post about my camera gear and how cheap it all is… Not only that but if you want to be exactly like me you can.
Let me also say that if any of you want to buy some photos from the shop RIGHT HERE, maybe I could get like a new hat or something… Or food. I suppose I should buy food with it. Anyway I know there are some photographers that talk about lenses you “MUST HAVE’ and you google it to find out that you need to sell a kidney to even get close to being able to afford anything like it. I am not gonna do that to you, actually I would say that the gear I have in my bag is VERY affordable, even for a PRO PHOTOGRAPHER! Now the next bit is more for those that want camera gear, if that is not you, skip to the bottom 😛
Here we go, lets start with the bag itself. It is a Lowepro Transit 350 aw back pack, just awesome for travel, comfortable and very well organised, with great movable compartments inside of it, counts as bag ON TOP of your carry on luggage cause it fits under the seat! Along with speed access to the camera. Cost ~$120
Camera Body Nikon D600. There was an incredible deal on this body AND a lens (the one below) for $2000, I really have not seen that a ton, HOWEVER if you seek, you will find! But getting a NEW D600 will be tough now, here is the D610 Body it is kind of an important piece of camera gear.. HEY if you are wondering what camera to buy READ THIS FIRST!
Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens that came with body! This is still a $600 lens!
Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens is around $125, this lens is a STEAL! It is SO good for portraits, the bokeh is delicious! And at f1.8 it’s super fast! You can get the next one up for 100 bucks more if you want. the extra cool thing about this lens is that I have a reversing ring so I can flip it backwards and have a cheap excuse for a macro lens!
Now this next lens I don’t recommend but it is cheap, like $169 cheap, but I got what I paid for… Nikon AF Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4-5.6G Lens I mean it CAN work, but I wish I spent more…
For massive night sky shots I bought the Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 IF ED UMC Lens For Nikon with AE Chip $350 is great for what this does!
Now say what you will about China, but if you are willing to wait 30 odd days you can get stuff off of eBay FOR CHEEEEEAP! Like real cheap! Reverse ring, shutter covers, eye piece, lens caps, remote trigger, lens pen, cleaning cloths, spray, adapter rings for like 15 bucks! You will spend $15 on lens caps anywhere else! So utilize eBay for great stuff, you do not need Zeiss lens caps…
Flash and trigger. I Did not get the Nikon or canon versions, because spending $600+ on them is like WAY over my budget. The Yongnuo Flash and remote trigger is rated SO high, by many people. I love it, simple, great range, and CHEAP! Seriously the flash AND trigger were 95 cdn dollars on ebay. I have the third gen one, but the link there is to the fourth one!
Polaroid battery grip. I wasn’t sure if I needed one of these, but for the price tag it was worth the risk. I don’t use it when I am doing landscapes, but if I am shooting anything street it is SO great to have!
Extra Batteries, now some people won’t use non branded batteries, I do, and for the most part they work… Sometimes you get a bad one and that sucks BUT you get 2 for $40… Go check how much a Nikon battery is…
Shoulder sling. Ok toss the lame strap the camera comes with already and get a sling! So slick, so comfortable, and mine was $8 😛
Tripod. I spent a bit more on this, because a tripod is kind of a critical item. I got the Manfrotto Beefree series, compacts super tight for when I travel, but still is very stable. I paid around $220 which is cheaper than is listed on that site.
Filters. I have a few cheap uv filters from Walmart to protect some glass, but I dont always use them. No I have tried to use circular ND filters, and they are all horrible… Get a strait ND. Now there is an awesome system I WANT called LEE Filters, but it is pricey. So after much review I settled on a Tiffen filter. The Tiffen 3.0. All of those long exposure shots are with that!
And Finally THE ORB! Currently my favorite piece of camera gear! They come in many sizes, which of course will determine cost. Mine is a 80mm and I paid $25 on eBay!
OK ALL PEOPLE THAT DON’T CARE ABOUT THAT STUFF READ HERE AGAIN. Actually there isn’t that much more to read… EXCEPT to spread the word about Lights, Camera, Dad, and how I am just a normal guy that has to work like the rest of the population… Or something to get people to come here… Anyway.
