Pssst. Your Orb is showing… Shooting with an Orb.
You may have seen these crazy balls popping up all over the internet. People say they are fake, rain drops, or “What the heck is that?!” Well I too have jumped on the ferry ride and picked up an orb to add some creativity to my… Creativity? Honestly I believe nature is pretty awesome already, but once in a while mixing things up a bit really causes things to become way more interesting! So today I want to tell you about shooting with an orb!
Now I need to get something out of my system.
Clearly I am a child and anytime there are any sort of “balls” reference made I cannot help but chuckle… My kids love it too… Wife, not so much… Balls. There ok I’ll try to move on.
So what is an orb? Well there are a few varieties, but essentially its a spherical hunk of glass. And they are really easy to come by, head to Amazon or Ebay and search crystal ball and you will have a slew of these things roll out (I’m punny). The one I got was on Ebay, 25 USD and is 80mm. Pretty cheap for something that gives such cool results IMHO!
This was the first time I was shooting with an orb. It was my friends ball, and I just had to touch it… I mean shoot it… Anyway after I processed this image I was like “I think I need some balls” Although I only have one right now…
The orb will reflect everything upside down. It works like an eyeball. Our eye already flips the image we see for us (Trust me, or just google it), but this is the same principle, the light is flipped and we see the image completely upside down! I have seen some very cool images where people flip the photo vertically so that the reflection is right side up. There are a lot of cool things to try out.
Focus is a huge part of nailing shooting with an orb. The idea is that everything INSIDE of the orb is tack sharp. Sometimes I have noticed that the camera auto focuses on the edge of the ball, so I have pulled manual focus lately and am WAY happier with the result!
There is not much outside of the focus that you need to do. I set up the camera like I would without the orb in frame. Above I even tried some long exposure shots, works great! The orb just adds a new dimension of shooting!
This is my most recent image I have while shooting with an orb. To this point I would say I nailed it! I love how crisp the focus is, the foreground I find interesting AND the blurry background really gives scope to what I was shooting!
So let’s all get our balls out! And try something new! Before everyone gets one and we are all deathly sick of seeing everyone’s balls… Sorry I’ll stop now… Ok but seriously before it’s too late! While you are waiting for your orb to come in check out some of my Photography Basics posts RIGHT HERE! The photo basics course will help you get to the point where you can really get some interesting orb shots! Have fun while shooting with an orb everyone!
