Everyone needs a great selfie right!?
The age of the selfie, do you know that just a little while ago “selfie” was the word of the year? Crazy right. But crazier still is that nearly 100 million selfies are posted online everyday! Why is this happening? And does it matter? Well I am going to share some thoughts on the subject of The Selfie.
First of all not all selfies are evil… Actually I really like to see a photo of a person as their profile picture on social media sites! There is something that makes you feel that the person you just added is kind of real (and I emphasize KIND OF). And while I would say that most selfies are just redundant, some selfies are actually pretty dang awesome! Check these ones out.
So selfies aren’t ALL bad I guess. HOWEVER (Ya you knew it was coming) what about the 99.9% that are not like the ones above? What about the seemingly insatiable desire to seek for others approval, via a “made up” photo of myself? Now cleverly masked as a selfie… Ya it just got real.
We have all abused a drug, and now can’t get enough self gratification from it.
You see, I am of the belief that we are regressing with all of the “I’m So Awesome!” Talk. Why is that? Well we constantly take things way too far don’t we? Yes we are all awesome, yes we can do cool stuff, yes we are creative, and smart, and beautiful and blah blah blah… That isn’t the point though. The point is that we have all abused a drug, and now can’t get enough self gratification from it! And it has become to evident, to the tune of a hundred million selfies a day! And we do this just to feel better about ourselves. Well my friends, we are clearly drinking from the wrong fountain.
Recently I posted my “once a year” selfie. If you follow me you know I post a photo a day roughly, of nature and architecture from all over the world, last week I posted my selfie, wouldn’t you know it, but it has tripled my regular ‘likes’! “Wow I feel so great, people think I’m a handsome dude!” Well honestly, it’s rather depressing haha!
It’s depressing because we just jump all over this stuff, I post pretty cool photos of some pretty cool places and sites, yet a selfie in a mirror from some random 16 year old can frequently out do even the best photos, in terms of popularity.
What will people do once the selfie syndrome lacks the punch it once had?
What’s even more depressing is that this desire of self gratification is growing stronger across the globe. So what is the next step? What will people do once the selfie syndrome lacks the punch it once had? When all of the “I am just so proud of myself, and I am just doing the awesomeness that I deserve, and it doesn’t matter if I step on 12 people to get what I want LOOK AT ME! LOOOOK!” comes to a crashing halt. But I digress…
A funny satirical video came across my news feed the other day about a husband talking about his wife. The husband, along with everyone else was shocked that his wife ran a marathon, AND DIDN’T tell anyone! Watch it!
This video shows what I am pointing to, our culture has turned completely narcissistic! It needs to stop, because the next step of this “Selfie Age”, this drug of self gratification, is going to really hurt people.
Let’s not shame those that post a selfie, hey we all do it! But let’s ask ourselves where our source really comes from! What motivates us? Is it insecurity that needs to be fed by very artificial means? Or is what we enjoy actually genuine? These are the questions I constantly ask myself, and I think everyone else should too. Please feel free to leave your thoughts below.
