Lightroom Clarity… Love and Hate.
The Lightroom clarity slider can be a valuable asset, however it can be horribly misused. Another photo help for all of you photogs out there, I have seen a HORRIBLY misused editing adjustment popping up more and more, and IT NEEDS TO STOP! Lightroom has amazing quality’s and editing adjustments, and I use many of them on every photo, however, there are some tweaks that are ruining many peoples photos! The Lightroom Clarity slider….
Ever see a photo with an incredibly horrible looking halo around certain objects? You can really notice it when there is a tree or a building against the sky. This happens due to a few reasons, one reason is because people jumped so hard onto the HDR (read about HDR photography here) boat, that they didnt learn how to drive the boat before they found themselves in the middle of the ocean… Now take that and add in the Lightroom clarity slider and you have unleashed a mockery of anything good about digital photography…
I use the Lightroom clarity slider quite a bit, it can be VERY useful, but there is a line for sure, and it’s time we stop crossing it! I think with all the heat digital photography is taking of late it is largely due to people trying to push an image (like above) as “natural” when clearly, it just isn’t.
I just made a short video to show what is happening when the Lightroom clarity slider gets pushed too far. FYI clarity is also referred to as “Structure” on Instagram, or Google photo editor.
Now we know exactly what is happening, let’s try to watch the overindulgence with this, very useful, but also, very dangerous Lightroom Clarity slider! Hey need some more photography help? Then be sure to go through the Photography Basics Course! It will help you get images from your brain to the internet for everyone to see!
