But it’s dark out! Why are we going on a night shoot?
Ummm cause it’s awesome! Night photography is incredibly fun, and I do it a lot. The awesome part of a night shoot is seeing the incredible images that you can come up with, even in the dark! Today I will take you through a night shoot I had recently, get ready!
I have talked a lot about Night Photography in the past, largely due to my incredible love for it! I remember not really understanding that a night shoot was even possible, now that I do I really try to teach more people of how possible it really is!
So the night of April 16th I received an email that the Aurora Borealis was on high alert! It’s always exciting to me when it happens, though recently it has happened a lot it is still a rarity. AND the Aurora is always different, so you never really know what you are going to get. Meaning you HAVE to race out into the night time to capture what you see! You can’t miss it !!
I set out into the night, heading toward my first place of shooting. A pond I have taken some awesome photos was the first stop. I go there a lot, but it is close by and I wasn’t too sure how intense the Aurora would get, turns out it wasn’t really going strong yet. SO since I was prepared for that I had a pack of glow sticks with me. I always wanted to try light painting with them, here is what came out of it!
Enough of this I thought, so I raced off to my next location. A nearby old church that I have photographed in a lightning storm before. I always wanted to get the Aurora into a shot of it, and fortunately by the time I got there the Lights were picking up!
So it was time to move again. I love shooting with people a lot actually, but at times I also like shooting on my own. When I am by myself I can move at my own pace, and be weird-er… As the people I normally shoot with will probably read this let me just say that you guys are awesome and I never go shooting by myself… Anyway whilst alone I do weird stuff like this…
Ya… Like I said I don’t just write weird things, I do weird things too…
Ok so I decided to explore a little bit on the night shoot. I found an access road on the side of the highway, and I am SO happy with what I discovered, here it is!
At this point I needed to… Ummmm, well I headed to the bushes on the right…. And whilst I was doing my thing there I came across another great site!
I was off one more time, I felt like driving for a bit. There is something about exploring that excites me. When I first moved to Edmonton 8 years ago, I would jump in the car and try to get lost in the city! If I have nowhere to be it’s amazing to discover! If I do have somewhere to be getting lost is the worst…. I pulled up to a steep bank that overlooked a pond, my last stop for the evening.
Well there you are, a night shoot with Jesse Martineau! I plan on making these a lot more informative in the future, with some videos. But I just wanted to give you all a taste of what happens when I race off into the night!
