Strong leadership is CRITICAL to raising kids!
I suppose it’s time to talk once again about the 5 sons I am trying to raise. Recently someone asked me about my parenting style. Actually, they more or less were saying they didn’t like my parenting style. But as I explained what I was trying to achieve they realized that, while still not perfect, it is exactly how my children (or any kids) need to be raised. Leadership is everywhere, we cannot avoid it, however it is time we start to embrace leadership that actually LEADS people, not just moves with the hottest trends.
I lead my boys by not doing what they want, but by teaching them to do what I want. “Wait what!?!?!” Yes that’s true. Think about it. If you are training an employee at a job site, they have no experience, they are completely leaning upon someone else to teach them what to do. No one argues that. In fact if someone was just thrown into a job without being shown what to do, it would be plain wrong! So we teach them, we get them to do what we need them to do! And they learn, and do it! Why should raising kids be any different? They are kids! They have no experience yet. They NEED us to teach them!
I find it mind-boggling that anyone would just throw a kid into life without teaching them. There are different teaching styles sure, but it is still leadership, and unless it’s actually STRONG it is not going to succeed. Which brings me to the warning for parents. DO NOT LET YOUR KIDS RULE YOUR HOUSE! I have seen where it goes, the kids will turn on the parent that does not LEAD them. I am serious, if you think you can “Friend” your kid into doing what you want, you will have a kid that will grow up to resent you. Read more about “Friendship Parenting” right here.
The family is not supposed to be a democracy, there are parents, and there are kids. Kids should not get a vote on how to raise themselves, and why not, you ask? Because they are kids! They do not have near the experience to lead a family, nor to raise themselves. So let’s not just focus on the negatives of “leadership” because when we do that we tend to toss out the great parts of leadership, like actually leading people… We are kinda dumb that way…
