How can a stoves change lives?
One of the great experiences I had on my recent trip to Guatemala (read part one here) was the opportunity to change some lives by installing a stove. Stoves in North America are used nearly daily, it isn’t different in other parts of the world. However the technology certainly is different. Most rural locations in Central and South America use open fires to cook all of their meals. This has a tremendous health impact on ALL people.
I spoke to the base director of Fe Viva World Missions, Matt Blacklock about the Stove for Life project.
In Guatemala, as in many other countries, breathing in the toxic fumes while preparing meals puts Guatemala families at risk for respiratory illnesses, blindness and burns on a daily basis. It is estimated that 77% of Guatemalan families use wood as their main fuel source. To diminish this health hazard, Fe Viva is installing efficient wood burning stoves with ventilation pipes to prevent smoke from filling the home. These highly energy efficient wood burning stoves use 75 percent less wood than conventional stoves and get hot enough to cook quicker. These stoves will benefit local families in the communities with cost efficient and better health.
A stove costs $300 USD, that includes the stove, installation, AND training on how to use it. Each family must attend a course on how to use the stove. This is to ensure that they will use it effectively and not abuse it. I know if someone gave me a whole new stove that ran completely different than what I was used to I would very much appreciate the help! To sponsor a stove, and maybe even travel to Guatemala to install some stoves visit the Fe Viva Site Here.
So myself and 5 other guys set out in the morning to install a stove. I pretty much just took photos… But they had it under control 😛
At one point I asked Matt how people heard about the program, he told me “word of mouth mainly” just then the neighbors showed up asking about the stoves!
that’s it! Stoves that change lives. It really doesn’t take much to really change someones life for the better! Be sure to check out the Fe Viva site, there is also a video on how the Stove for Life program works. Thanks for supporting these guys as they continue the work in Guatemala!
